In 2019, Le Monde commissioned Laia Abril to travel to La Réunion island, east of Madagascar, to produce a photographic series in response to five feminicides that had taken place there. Rather than reproducing the portraits often taken from victims’ social media profiles, images that frequently reinforce moral judgement about the private lives of murdered women, the work shifts its attention to acts of collective mourning.
Flowers left on graves become traces of the bond between the living and the dead, fragments of affection that uphold memory in the face of violence. Feminicidesforms part of Abril’s long term research project A History of Misogyny, which examines the historical, symbolic, and visual structures through which violence against women is sustained.
